Accept your child with love and understanding.
Essentially, your child has the same needs as other children. Your
child has the need to hear the reassuring words “I love you”.
Work with your child on an older intellectual
level. Recognize your child’s intellectual maturity. Expect him/her to
understand as an older child would.
Remember he/she is a child, not a little adult,
and he/she needs to live the life of a child. Care must be taken not
to overemphasize his/her abilities in front of others.
Help your child learn from life while he/she is
young. Encourage your child’s natural history.
Challenge your child to try his/her solutions, to
learn to test his/her ideas. Parents make a great contribution by
encouraging a child to think situation through and consider the
consequences. Be available. However, sometimes it is wise to wait
until he/she asks for help.
Read to your child. Encourage you child to read.
Provide a variety of learning materials. Present activities such as the following:
Discover new uses for materials such as automobile tires or umbrellas.
Make up a code and write messages.
Estimate distances, and pace off the distance to
check the answers.
Provide enriching experiences, such as music
lessons.
Provide a relaxed home relationship that is
conductive to discussion and counsel. Your child needs you to listen
to him/her.
Be sensitive to your child’s needs, and do
everything possible to meet his/her needs.
Use these important phrases: “That’s a great
idea.” “Tell me more about what you want to know.” “That’s a good
question. Let’s find out.” “What do you think about that?” “Try it. Go
ahead. I’ll help you when you need it.”
Encourage friendships.
Visit libraries, museums, planetariums, zoos,
nature spots, concerts, and other places.
Read and discuss various resource materials and
research that provide helpful suggestions and other information, such
as characteristics of gifted children.
Discover opportunities to use his/her talents now
and in preparation for future goals and career plans.
